Roscoe Lee Browne launched his theatre career with the inaugural season of The New York Shakespeare Festival in Central Park. Since then he has appeared off and on Broadway, and in theatre festivals throughout the United States and Europe. For his performance in Derk Walcott's "DREAM ON MONKEY MOUNTAIN" he received the L.A. Drama Critics' Award for Best Actor. He has originated roles in two of August Wilson's works, "JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE" (for which he again received the L.A. Drama Critics' Award) and on Broadway in "TWO TRAINS RUNNING," for which he received a Tony nomination and the Helen Hayes Award for distinguished work in the theatre. Mr. Browne has worked extensively in television and his filmwork includes the title role in William Wyler's "THE LIBERATION OF LORD BYRON JONES," Mark Rydell's "THE COWBOYS," Peter Glenville's "THE COMEDIANS," Sidney Poitier's "UPTOWN SATURDAY NIGHT" and Alfred Hitchcock's "TOPAZ." Annually he tours the U.S. with Anthony Zerbe in their "BEHIND THE BROKEN WORDS," an evening of poetry.
